Do you remember the Beebe Ranch as it was described in Misty of Chincoteague? In the story, Grandpa Beebe kept a herd of half-wild ponies on his property, where he bred equally wild foals to be sold. Before Paul and Maureen put in the time to gentle the foals, they were sold as unhandled youngsters. In the modern world of horse breeding, with frozen semen, AI, and foals handled from birth, this sort of traditional pasture breeding seems like a thing of the past.

But the Chincoteague Pony Farm, owned by the Leonard family of Chincoteague Island, is the only traditional Chincoteague breeding operation left.

The Leonard family, part of the Chincoteague community for more than a hundred years, owns the northern tip of Chincoteague. Drive up Leonard Lane and over a cattle guard and you’ll find the Chincoteague Pony Farm, where the ponies roam free among the marsh grass.

The Chincoteague Pony Farm produces and sells several foals a year and often donates ponies to the fire company to help with genetic diversity— most recently the two new broodmares Fuzzy Peaches and Baby in 2011. Many of the herd stallions born in the 1990’s came from the pony farm, where Donald Leonard

Dakota Sky has already had her 2013 foal— a chestnut pinto filly who looks like she’s going to shed out to be the same color as her dam.
It’s impossible to tell at this point if she’s been bred back for a 2014 foal.
